Rationale

Although organic farming is not explicitly mentioned in the 2030 Agenda, the EU considers organic farming to be a production method that places the greatest emphasis on environmental and wildlife protection and, with respect to livestock production, on animal welfare considerations. It avoids or greatly reduces the use of synthetic chemical inputs such as fertilizers, pesticides, additives, and medical products. The production of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their use in animal feed are prohibited.

The “Area under organic farming” indicator is part of the EU Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicator set and is included in the European Commission’s Priorities under the European Green Deal. The indicator measures the proportion of the total utilized agricultural area (UAA) occupied by organic farming (existing organically farmed areas and areas in the process of conversion).
